Research Associate Chemist

Siplast, a leader in the commercial roofing manufacturing industry is currently seeking an Associate Chemist for our Research & Technical Development (RTD) department in Arkadelphia, AR.

Here’s what the job is about:
The Research and Technical Development (RTD) Associate Chemist will be primarily responsible for research of roofing systems and components. This includes hands-on testing and research with RTD laboratory projects and equipment. He/she will be responsible for the experiment design, execution and reporting. This position will report to the Manager of Technical Development.
1. RTD projects under his/her responsibility including:
a. Laboratory project planning using proven methods, e.g., DOE, and other accepted scientific methods.
b. Review RTD projects and activities assigned to him/her with the Manager-Technical Development.
c. Inclusive laboratory reporting; written, oral and graphical.
2. Research and hands-on product development testing, including roofing and waterproofing membranes, asphalt blends, insulating substrates, accessory materials, and application techniques / equipment.
3. Physical, mechanical, structural and chemical analyses including, but not
limited to; HPLC, FTIR, stress / strain equipment, viscometer, microscopy, wind uplift testing, etc.
4. Participate in various plant/laboratory/company team meetings as needed.
5. Miscellaneous assignments at the Manager, Technical Development’s discretion.
Here’s what we’re looking for:
Minimum Bachelor Degree in Science in chemistry or chemical engineering with an emphasis on polymer chemistry.
Recent graduate or up to five years research laboratory experience.
Experience in the roofing manufacturing or building materials industry a plus, but not required.
Proficient with computer software, i.e. Excel, CAD, Lotus Notes, PowerPoint, etc.
Good mathematical skills related to laboratory data analysis.
Good reporting skills; written, oral and graphical.
Good problem solving skills.
Capable of taking a complete project from start to finish with little or no supervision.
Hands-on testing skills with physical, mechanical and analytical methods.
Good manufacturing and laboratory practices knowledge.
Positive and enthusiastic attitude to promote good relations in a team environment.
Good literature / file researching practices.
General knowledge of roofing systems and practices, a plus.
Ability to climb ladders, work with heights
Visual acuity to inspect products, read documents, computer screens, and file
Ability to hear and speak on the phone
Ability to bend, pull, and reach to perform position functions
Ability to lift up to 100 lbs (roofing products, etc.) on an occasional basis
Manual dexterity to perform data entry, filing, product inspections, and position-related functions
