Assistant Buyer

SUMMARY: Assist buyers with database management, communications, reporting, product management, and associated other tasks involved with the daily activities of the arts & crafts merchandising category.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following as well as other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.

 

· Use catalog management software to make product modifications and set up new product information using specifications provided.

· Communicate with foreign and domestic vendors to gather samples, pricing and other data needed to make product decisions.

· Perform quality testing on products; report testing results.

· Research and respond to customer product questions.

· Utilize warehouse database system to gather information for sales reporting and analysis.

· Gather competitive information and suggest new product ideas

· Utilize Excel to prepare sales reports and trend analysis.

· Assist with catalog preparation and organization as needed.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 2 years college required; plus as least 2 years experience or equivalent in related field. Candidate should have an interest in merchandising and a desire to take on additional responsibilities and continue to grow in the field.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to write business correspondence with foreign and domestic vendors in conformance with the prescribed style and format.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to understand sales trends, margin reports. Ability to create and update excel spreadsheets. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define and solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables, occasionally in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Must be detail-oriented, well organized and a self-starter.

· Must be task-oriented and able to multitask and prioritize in accordance with changing deadlines and priorities.

· Must be computer literate, comfortable with Excel and have experience with IBM-compatible computers.

· Must have the ability to quickly learn specific software.

· Must be able to independently use available resources to solve problems and answer questions.

· Must be willing to ask questions and be comfortable taking direction.

· Must demonstrate positive follow-through skills and meet deadlines.

Must communicate clearly and professionally in both written and verbal situations.
