Publications Production Manager

The Independent Institute http://www.independent.org is an award-winning, academic, non-partisan, non-profit public policy research and educational organization. We publish books and a quarterly journal, and hold conference and media events at our Oakland, CA and Washington, DC locations. We are currently seeking a Publications Production Manager who will be responsible for managing the Institute's publications process and information technology infrastructure.

The Publications Production Manager works with senior management on the production and scheduling of the Institute's print and online publications. Other production and web support staff report to this position. The Publications Production Manager manages and directs all
functions necessary to produce high quality and effective publications and marketing communication materials, including:
* Layout and prepare marketing material and publications for production
* Provide production support to research directors and authors to properly prepare their materials for publication and assist them in adhering to schedules;
* Manage outside copyeditors, designers, typesetters, proofreaders, and other freelance staff;
* Coordinate with printers and publishers to ensure publications and marketing communication materials are produced efficiently and on schedule;
* Maintain production quality control, including final review of all materials for readiness for production: permissions, covers, conforming to house style, overall layout and design, checking work of proofreaders, indexers, etc.; and
* Oversee the Institute’s IT activities, including its web services, network infrastructure, and FileMaker Pro administration.

Qualifications:
* 3 or more years book production or marketing communication experience, including design, editing, layout, typesetting, manufacturing and all other aspects of production.
* Expertise in project-management on multiple deadlines and working within a defined budget.
* Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
* Significant experience successfully managing freelance professionals and vendors.
* Experience working directly with authors and editors.
* Experience in project planning schedule creation, and the editorial production process;
* Proficiency in desktop publishing software in the Mac environment; Filemaker a plus.
* Understanding of book promotion, marketing processes, and order fulfillment.
