Managing Editor

944 Magazine – the hottest, fastest-growing magazine in the West currently seeks a Managing Editor for its Phoenix edition. The Managing Editor is responsible for supervising all aspects of localized editorial from creative conception to assignment and retrieval. Also responsible for copy editing of all local editorial and assisting in editing process for other editions.

 

Responsibilities

· Execute tasks in keeping with monthly deadlines.

· Working with all editorial staff and finalizing creative development of local editorial.

· Assigning all local editorial to staff of freelance writers.

· Follow-up and retrieval of all local editorial for deadline.

· Copy editing and fact checking all local editorial.

· Assigning freelance photographers for localized editorial when needed.

· Filtering W-9 forms and invoices for payment from freelance help to account payable when applicable.

· Coordination of all local picture pages.

· Coordinating with design department on layout and production of local editorial.

· Hiring, managing and maintaining staff of local freelance writers. Negotiating rates and payment.

· Supervise and delegate tasks to editorial interns such as editorial research and fact checking and editing assistance.

· Field media pitches, review and respond to email/voice mail messages, etc.

· Communicate regularly with events/PR director, sales team and fashion director for media pitches, story ideas and leads

· Perform necessary networking functions: attending events, meeting with PR contacts, etc.

 

 Qualifications

· At least 5+ years relative experience in journalism/editorial

· 3-5 years experience in a managerial role in editorial or other field

· B.A. in Journalism, English or related field

· Must be able to read and write in English

· Fluent knowledge of AP style

· Proficient in basic Mircosoft Office programs and use of the Internet

· Strong organization and communication skills

· Able to work non-traditional and extended hours as needed

· Strong writing and editing skills

· Able to work well in a fast paced environment and meet deadlines

· Proficient knowledge of Quark and/or InDesign a plus
