Position:  Linux/UNIX Systems Administrator

 

Location:  Birmingham, AL

Essential Job Functions:

 

The Unix Administrator is responsible for providing high-level support for various systems, including AIX, Solaris, with primary focus on Redhat Linux. Additional responsibilities include creation and maintenance of various shell and Perl scripts used to help proactively monitor and raise alarms for various applications. Perform and control day-to-day systems administration/management activities that may include initial set-up, configuration, testing of hardware or software platforms and/or customization to maintenance and upgrade projects. Undertake activities to achieve successful software deployments on Unix/Linux platforms. Perform hardware installation activities from initial setup and configuration to final checkout and activation. Good analytical, communication and interpersonal skills

 

Education and Training Required:

 Bachelors Degree in Information Technology or equivalent work experienceCertification in one or more major UNIX/Linux operating system is preferred but relevant work experience and history will be considered.A minimum of four years, UNIX/Linux systems administration experience in a corporate environment.

Skill Required:

 Give 3rd and 4th level support on various systems to problems escalated by other support/operation groups.Provide support for Disaster Recovery and Planning.Provide research and follow up into the causes and resolution of issues and help determine the future impact of these issues on the end-user.Monitor error logs to solve/prevent problems that affect server availability.Assist in the testing/certification of production installs.Create and maintain UNIX shell and perl scripts to be used with OS applications such as CRON to monitor, track and report on system resources, error logs etc. in order to raise the appropriate alarms.Support the problem reporting and escalation process with particular emphasis on minimizing the impact of application problems on the end-user through the use of timely and effective communications.Communicate information concerning application maintenance, new application implementation or other planned outages to various operation/support groups.Meet and communicate regularly with business sponsors to review priorities of items.Attend various meetings to ensure accurate dissemination of information between various support/operation groups. Ensure user satisfaction by providing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and quickly resolving complex problems.
