Tech Imaging Assistant, Certified

Overview : The primary purpose of this position is to assist the mammography technologists, nurse, Chief of Mammography and physicians by performing non-technical patient and procedure-related duties. This position will also be responsible for setting up sterile trays and for pre and post operative patient care instructions and education. The Technical Assistant also transports patients, assists with housekeeping, film processing, clerical and other related duties. This position possesses knowledge and demonstrates competence within their scope in the care/treatment of pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Service excellence is demonstrated by consistently exhibiting the BHA Service Standards in the performance of the job.

Responsibilities :

1. Assists Technologists and Nurse in pre and post procedure room preparation by obtaining necessary supplies, preparing contrast media and assisting patients on and off exam tables.
* Organizes supplies needed for procedure per procedure protocol.
* Inputs patient information data into the Ultrasound and Mammography Patient Information Window.
* Prepares and sets up interventional trays utilizing sterile technique and draws IV contrast per procedure protocol.
* Transports or escorts patients to the dressing and procedure rooms.
* Assists patients as necessary in changing into a hospital gown or robe prior to their scheduled procedure.
* Cleans room and equipment before and after each patient.
2. Assists technologists and nurse with observation including pre and post-operative care of patients having interventional procedures.
* Sits with patients while technologists or nurse are unavailable.
* Keeps patients and their family informed of their status including delays throughout the time they are in the Breast Center.
* Provides pre and post-operative care to patients including an explanation of the procedure, consent forms and post procedure instructions. Responsible for applying pressure and dressings to post operative patients.
* Performs and documents vitals for all patients both before and following all interventional procedures.
* Assists patients to restroom.
3. Assists the technologist with clerical duties.
* Starts and completes exams in the computer system.
* Retrieves patient files from the File Room.
* Assembles films, film folders, exam labels and requisition forms.
* Faxes and files patient reports and films.
* Assists in patient follow-up data entry.
* Turns in procedures for interpretation to Radiologist.
* Hangs and takes down films from alternator daily.
4. Assists the technologist with film processing and film processing equipment quality control.
* Processes films using conventional darkroom, daylight system, computed radiology system and laser system.
* Assists with running quality control checks on processing system.
* Cleans rollers and wipes down darkroom in the morning and afternoon.
5. Performs patient and biopsy specimen transport duties.
* Transports patients to and from the units, ER, etc. via appropriate mode of transport.
* Delivers specimens to Pathology and Cytology.
6. Stocks procedure rooms with linen and supplies.
* Maintains both procedure and dressing rooms with par levels of linen and procedure supplies.
* Delivers and picks up supplies from SPD and Pharmacy.
* Maintains par level of clerical supplies.
7. Answers telephones and routes messages.
8. Performs other duties as required.
Follows safety standards in all aspects of performance of the above functions, reports/removes unsafe equipment and attends safety education sessions.

Qualifications :

This position requires the applicant to have a high school diploma or its equivalent, be at least 18 years of age and speak English and Spanish. Must have successfully completed the Certified Technical Assistant Course. Must be physically able to safely lift and move patients. Must possess effective communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills. Previous experience in health care setting preferred. Must exercise discretion with patients, staff, physicians and the general public Must be CPR certified.
