Overview : SHIFT: Evenings The primary purpose of this position is to manage calls related to poisoning, drug identification and information, referrals, as well as other appropriate tasks under the direct supervision of Specialists in Poison Information, the Poison Center Manager, Medical Director, and Poison Center Director. This may include follow-up calls on poison exposures, as well as providing poison prevention education to callers.
Responsibilities :
1. Manages calls to the Banner Poison Control Center under the direct supervision of a Specialist in Poison Information.
2. Provides follow-up as appropriate to callers after a poison exposure as directed by a Specialist in Poison Information.
3. Acts consistently with all Poison Center policies, procedures, and treatment guidelines with referral of all calls outside the scope of their position to a Specialist in Poison Information.
4. Maintains accurate and complete documentation of each call utilizing the VDLE data collection system.
Follows safety standards in all aspects of performance of the above functions, reports/removes unsafe equipment and attends safety education sessions.
Qualifications :
Requires an understanding of the basic principles of pharmacology and toxicology, excellent verbal communication skills, bilingual in Spanish if possible, good visual acuity, ability to handle multiple telephone calls at the same time, a knowledge of a variety of drug, poison, and medical information resources, ability to interpret information resources rapidly and then apply them to a specific information question, basic keyboard typing skills, ability to sit for long periods of time. Work is performed in an open room at a computer workstation using either a telephone hand or head set and a standard computer keyboard and monitor. A computer printer and fax machine is also used. Must be able to stand, reach and lift heavy books from above eye level. Requires the ability to type and use special function keys on a computer keyboard, use a mouse to trackball, learn to function in different computer operating systems including Windows, DOS, and Windows NT, learn and apply the coding system of AAPCC-TESS to individual cases, learn and utilize an on-line data collection system. Requires the ability to speak and communicate with different people at different educational levels. Requires the ability to learn basic principles of scientific, medical research and continuous quality improvement.
