Under the direction of the Director, Office of Patient Safety, and the Patient Safety Program Manager, the Patient Safety Specialist provides leadership and administrative support for Partners-wide initiatives focused on team training, efforts of the Partners Patient Safety Leaders, the publication of the Patient Safety newsletter (Safety Net) and collaboration with Signature Initiative Team 2. Included is the responsibility for working closely with leadership to assure implementation of the goals, adherence to deliverables and timeliness as defined by leadership. Serves as project leader for multiple projects and improvement activities in the Office of Patient Safety of Clinical Affairs, and provides expert content knowledge for the area above.
1. Assist the Patient Safety Program Manager and works closely with System Leaders in guiding and coordinating efficient and consistent implementation of the Partners-wide goals.
2. Working under the direction of the Program Manager, serves to provide overall program direction for Partners Team Training.
a. Develop technical content, review pertinent literature, maintain content and curriculum materials, assist in the development of observation and outcome analyses.
b. Set up and maintain effective administration of team training program, manage effective roll out of programs, track and review participants' reports.
c. Give guidance to leaders across the system considering such a program.
3. With the direction of the Director and Program Manager, participate in all aspects of the Office of Patient Safety program plan implementation, assures compliance with defined goals, budget and timelines.
a. Responsible for business functions: marketing, operation performance and reporting.
b. Develops strategic alternatives for consideration by Director.
c. Analyses and develops responses to regulatory and legal mandates
d. Acts as PH liaison between internal constituencies and outside groups, such as the Risk Management Foundation, the Department of Public Health, and other credentialing Boards.
4. Working with the Chair of the Patient Safety Leaders and the Patient Safety Program Manager, the Patient Safety Specialist oversees aspects of planning, organizing, and staffing the group. The Patient Safety Leaders' overall goals are to foster coordination among hospital Patient Safety Groups for sharing best practices, benchmarking against quality goals, and supporting system-wide initiatives.
a. Manage agenda development, organize meeting content, documenting next steps and minutes, coordinating guest preparedness, and providing other support as necessary.
b. Organizes and serves as Patient Safety liaison to agreed upon PH wide Patient Safety quality improvement initiatives. The Specialist works with group leadership to jointly organize cross-institutional and multi-disciplinary efforts to improve performance towards the JCAHO Patient Safety Goals and other regulated compliance issues.
c. Developing analysis and supporting documentation for other topics of interest.
d. May be asked to represent Partners Health Care and tertiary care hospitals in several Commonwealth of Massachusetts health care task forces relating to public policy changes in patient safety requirements. This includes attending meetings as a representative of the network, gaining consensus within the Patient Safety Leaders group and other senior leadership on pertinent public policy issues, drafting testimony for public forums, and advocating for PH member institutions. Part of this representation role includes developing expertise on patient safety and especially team training issues.
e. Obtains and disseminates patient safety knowledge from media, industry, and government sources, including: Newspaper, periodical, and online sources; government legislation, promulgations, and interpretations; best practices in the industry; and general trends. Duties include interpreting information for relevance to constituencies, drafting summaries highlighting key points, and apprising constituencies of ongoing developments.
5. Utilizes quality tools in performance improvement including just-in-time training.
* Masters degree in related field to health care and five years experience in healthcare, preferably in quality measurement/improvement.
* Demonstrated quantitative and analytic skills and ability to understand health data and underlying data systems; ability to interpret results and convey the results to multiple audiences.
* Working knowledge of clinical quality improvement methods and concepts
* Excellent management skills
* Excellent organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, meet deadlines and manage to schedule.
* Demonstrated ability to work with representatives from healthcare institutions.
* Demonstrated ability to write reports
* Demonstrated strong PC skills, Microsoft applications including Word and Excel.
* Must be a self-starter.

* The ability to move through a wide range of environments throughout the System, some which may not be wheelchair accessible, is required. Independent transportation to location that my not be served by public transportation is necessary.
