Public Information Specialist
MAJOR DUTIES
Answers written and verbal inquiries and provides illustrative and informative recreational and tourism brochures, maps, including Maps–on-Demand, and other material. Explains BLM and other agency organization, the wide variety of resource programs and resource management objectives to groups and individual so that the customers are aware of the opportunities available. Works closely with State and Field Office specialists as needed in order to answer inquiries pertaining to BLM programs and activities.
Provides resources and information in response to general public inquiries, conducting research when necessary. Incumbent must take extra steps to ensure that the customers given all available sources of information regarding the inquiry. When appropriate, refers complex technical inquiries to the proper sources of information.
Has numerous daily contacts with a wide variety of people and must deal effectively and diplomatically with this diverse clientele.
Greets visitors to the PLIC and interacts with the public in a way that enhances the “image” of the Bureau while obtaining or providing relevant information in a minimum amount of time. Many times the incumbent will be making the first impression for BLM.
Responds to telephone calls or walk-in public personally and provides the information desired on routine or procedural matters. Information on routine/procedural matters provided by the Information Specialist might include requests for information about recreational activities on public lands, including camping, hiking, OHV areas, permit requirements, other recreation opportunities, tourism, etc. Directs callers or walk-in public needing more specific information to the appropriate Staff or Program Specialist.
Remains sensitive to the changing informational needs of customers. Makes recommendations to the PLIC liaison for improving public service to visitors. Implements those recommendations that are approved.
Create and maintain an inquiry data log which will document public interest in BLM and other agency programs, land use activities, environmental education and visitor satisfaction level for the purpose of making recommendation for improving customer service. Evaluate data to present to the PLIC liaison on a quarterly basis.
At times other employees, volunteers or students may assist with the PLIC. Coordinates schedules of other PLIC personnel to ensure breaks, lunch and days off are covered. Conducts training for all back-ups and volunteers who will substitute for the Specialist when the incumbent is absent.
Maintains a reference book that contains recreational information for BLM and other agencies opportunities and sites for the purpose of providing information to both internal and external customers.
Coordinates with Public Affairs and other Program Specialists to insure complete and current information is being disseminated through the PLIC. Prepares correspondence in reply to general requests for information. Will often require research or discussion with other staff members. Must be consistent with BLM policy.
