Vice President of Development

Summary of Position

Under the general guidance and direction of the President and Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President of Development is part of the Senior Management Team and is responsible for the planning, organizing, directing and implementation of all external fund-raising activities for the United Way of Greater Los Angeles (UWGLA).  He/she will work closely with the President/CEO, Development Staff, Development Committee, Volunteer Fundraising Teams and the Board of Directors and must be able to cultivate and maintain positive relationships.  The VP will build and maintain strong relationships with foundations, corporations, government agencies and individuals to meet the organization’s 5-year strategic plan.  He/she will capitalize on UWGLA’s previous service and funding successes and leverage those to increase funding levels to support the strategic plans of the organization.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 Establish fund-raising goals and objectives each year, and be accountable for ensuring that set goals and objectives are met; Direct a staff of fundraising professionals, with annual assessment of their performance; build and motivate an enthusiastic and effective team that works in cooperation but independently; Manage and solicit a group of major gifts prospects and coordinate the personal cultivation and solicitation of select volunteers; Serve on the Strategic Implementation Team providing vital feedback, guidance, and donor perspective to the process; Assist in developing United Way’s product marketing strategy, including donor surveys, feasibility studies, linking product to fund-raising strategies and the development of “cases for support”; Create fund-raising strategy to wrap around all appropriate events, communications and recognition of donors and prospects to maintain and build the image of United Way of Greater Los Angeles; Serve as the liaison with the Campaign Cabinet and the Board of Directors, providing bi-monthly reports of fund-raising progress; Promote UWGLA and its mission within the community;

 

Minimum Requirements

 Bachelor’s Degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Management or a related discipline or equivalent work experience. Minimum of 5 to 7 years of management experience culminating in a senior administrative role in a development/fundraising department; Extensive experience and increasing responsibility in fund raising, with demonstrated success in prospecting, cultivating, asking and closing corporate, foundation,  workplace, individual, major gifts and new business revenue; Experience with modern major gifts techniques (moves management, prospect research, solicitation timing and “Pipeline” status tracking systems); Experience working with fund-raising volunteers and in developing solicitation strategies that incorporate a multi-faceted approach to fund-raising that works effectively toward clear objectives; A high level of comfort and skill in working with board members, major individual donors and prospects, and corporation and foundation leaders; Superior verbal and written communication skills; Demonstrated ability to effectively manage staff and department; must be skilled at staff motivation, inspiration and coaching; Ability to implement strategic and annual plans; Must Posses high energy, a strong work ethic, and an unquestioned reputation for honesty and integrity.
