Environmental Planning Group Leader

Full-time Minimum Requirements: BA/BS in Planning, Environmental Science or related field.

20+ years experience in environmental planning, natural resource management, or land use planning, including previous experience in a consulting firm.

Strong knowledge of NEPA compliance and federal environmental regulations.

Experience in hydrology, Clean Water Act permitting, working with federal agencies (BLM, USFS, NPS), transportation planning, environmental compliance for transportation projects, energy project work (utility siting, renewable energy project development, environmental compliance)or other related experience.

Job Description:

This person will be part of a senior management team in the Environmental Planning Division. As the Group Leader for the Environmental Planning Group, this individual would be responsible for managing team leaders (who have direct reports themselves) within the group. Staff management responsibilities typically include workload management, career path planning, and mentoring.

Management of environmental planning/NEPA projects will also be a key part of the position to include management of the work efforts of the project team, tracking the schedule and budget, ensuring quality control, providing technical oversight, and being the key point of contact for the client.

This individual will also be responsible for marketing and business development, including building client relationships and guiding the group's development and implementation of marketing strategies for particular clients or types of work.

This group works on large, complex NEPA projects that are sometimes national in scope or interest and provides a unique opportunity to expand or build upon existing NEPA experience. The breadth of resources in our division and URS overall provides support for a senior person who wants to pursue relevant business development opportunities and large projects. In addition, our use of technology (GIS, visual simulations, etc.) is strongly linked with planning, and provides another unique opportunity to build upon existing skills and experience.

Skills Utilized/Developed:

This position requires clear, concise communication skills including strong writing abilities, the initiative to coordinate project activities within a team, and productive interaction with clients and agencies.

Strong knowledge of the financial considerations and budget management for a consulting project and appropriate communication with clients and agencies (including marketing).

Project Examples:

NEPA projects in the energy sector including third-party EISs; resource management planning for Federal agencies; NEPA compliance for transportation projects; other environmental permitting for utilities and land development.

Reporting Structure:

This position reports to the Environmental Planning Division Manager and will supervise a staff of 6 Team Leaders and 2 Senior Planners.
