Description: Engineer-in-Training Program (Transmission) Overview
The Engineer-in-Training (Transmission) program is an 18-month program designed to develop engineers in areas such as customer service, leadership, and accountability while promoting a comprehensive understanding of the Power Delivery process. The EIT position will work in an area of Power Delivery while taking classes pertaining to but not limited to Power Distribution, Transmission Lines, and Substation Design & Maintenance Support. The EIT will develop specific knowledge based on the Power Delivery department where located.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Possess a BS degree in the following Engineering disciplines from an ABET Accredited program: Civil (preferred), Electrical or Mechanical; Overall GPA of 3.0 preferred but not required; Co-op, intern, or similar experience within the Southern Company family or other companies is a plus; Demonstrated proven leadership and organization skills, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills; Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment; Must graduate, or have graduated between May 2006 and May 2007.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The program encompasses a variety of training in both technical and non-technical areas. It promotes the development of attributes already possessed by candidates selected for the program as referenced in the list below. Upon completion of the program, candidates will be better prepared to continue their career objectives in technical or non-technical areas of Alabama Power Company including but not limited to Line Design, Maintenance Support, Operations, and Reliability.
Technical
Emphasis on safe work practices as a first priority in all work responsibilities
Proficient in switching procedures as outlined in the Electric System Operating Procedure (ESOP)
Ability to understand existing technology and utilize software applications
General knowledge of right-of-way requirements, line outage coordination, and storm restoration on and off system
Overview of other departments such as Contract Administration, Substations, Transmission Planning, and Transmission Customer Service
Formal hands-on field training including Mechanized Equipment and Pole Climbing
Formal classroom training in Transmission Line Design practices
Training in utilization of company construction standards and utility codes
Ability to represent the company and support its objectives
Additional Technical (Maintenance Area Emphasis)
Extensive on-the-job training in regional operation and maintenance activities
Exposure to Transmission Line Design, Construction, and the Alabama Control Center
In-depth training in Labor Relations (IBEW issues), operations, field work with crews, contractor interaction, line outage coordination, and storm restoration
Additional Technical (Design Emphasis)
Combination of extensive on-the-job training and formal classroom training in Transmission Line Design
Exposure to Transmission Line Maintenance, Construction, and the Alabama Control Center
Opportunity to accept and manage multiple, challenging projects
Non-Technical
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
Understand customer service expectations and relationships

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have flexibility with regards to the following: ability to travel for training requirements (some overnight); availability to assist in storm restoration efforts on and off the Alabama Power Company system; ability to relocate within the Alabama Power Company service territory for additional training opportunities within the EIT Program for career advancement.
