Waste Management Engineer
Job Purpose:
Supports the Waste Management organization through technical planning to include maintaining plans, procedures, closure cost estimates, Waste Analysis Plans, and treatment and disposal contracts in accordance with company requirements. Assists in waste generators in characterizing hazardous wastes for proper management per ADEM regulations. Responsible for setting up and maintaining 90-day storage areas per ADEM regulations and company requirements.
Duties:
* Analyzes material specifications and sampling/analysis results to determine the characterization of hazardous wastes. Uses chemical expertise and appropriate references to accurately assign RCRA hazardous waste codes to commercial chemical products. Interprets laboratory analytical data to accurately assign RCRA hazardous waste codes to process wastes.
*Develops, revises, maintains documents (plans, procedures, etc.) to comply with environmental and other company requirements. Implements Waste Management plans and procedures.
* Analyzes plant operations, waste management data, and waste management reports to assess, recommend, and implement improvements in the areas of waste minimization and environmental compliance.
* Responsible for setting up 90-day hazardous waste storage areas at facility to meet ADEM requirements, and coordinates with other facility organizations and PMCSD, as necessary.
*Develops and implements the Waste Analysis Plan to ensure hazardous waste sampling and analysis is performed in compliance with the RCRA permit and regulations. Ensures the Waste Analysis Plan represents the most efficient, economical, and operationally sound means of characterizing process-related wastes.
* Develops and analyzes plant documentation (such as procedures, plans, ECPs, permit modifications, etc) to ensure compliance with waste management requirements.
* Technical expert for the Waste Management organization regarding hazardous waste treatment and disposal contracts.
* Leads and participates in Waste Management and Environmental surveillances and audits.
* Develops solutions to complex waste management problems. Identifies opportunities for facility Project cost savings, develops action plans, and investigates events.
* Represents facility in technical meetings with the Army as the technical expert concerning waste management activities.
* Performs Shipping Agent duties when required (manifesting of hazardous waste shipments).
* Wears various levels of Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) in the performance of job duties.
* Works in close proximity to hazardous chemicals, chemical agents and decontamination solutions. Must be able to acknowledge and respond to flashing lights and sirens and be able to don a protective mask and evacuate up to two (2) miles in an expeditious manner.
* Works in environments with elevated temperatures.
* Maintains accountability of property.
* Be able to work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays, as required to support 24 hour processing of the facility.
* Required to fill in for the Waste Management Manager in their absence. Other duties as specifically assigned.
* Performs hazardous waste worker duties in permitted or regulated facilities. Duties may involve one or more of the following: Movement, containerization, storage, identification, record keeping, emergency response and/or disposing of hazardous waste.
Skills/Qualifications:
Working knowledge of, and be able to interpret and apply, environmental laws and regulations and standard engineering and operations practices.
Must be able to wear various levels of Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE). Must be able to read and interpret blueprint drawings, layouts and specifications.
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or scientific discipline. Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Environmental Engineering preferred.
Previous environmental/waste mgt. training highly desirable.
Minimum 1 - 3 years experience in hazardous waste management.
Experience in plant operation (chemical demilitarization, nuclear, or other highly-regulated industrial plant) desirable.
