Power Plant Technician
Purpose: Under general supervision, performs responsible high voltage (415 V to 11 KV) electrical work involving the installation, operation, maintenance, testing and repair of high voltage electrical power generation and distribution systems, facilities and related systems, transformers, generators, switchgear, metering and control systems, equipment, machinery, power appliances within acceptable national and local codes, safety rules and electrical standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Install, operate, maintain, test and repair a variety of high voltage electrical generation and distribution systems, power grid, facilities and related systems, to include high voltage distribution feeders and conduit banks, substations, high voltage distribution equipment including transformers, unit substations, distribution switchboards, switchgear, generators, circuit breakers, panes, cables and cable splicing and termination equipment, and related protective and metering devices in accordance with applicable National Electric Code, safety and electrical standards.Test circuits, power grids, transformers, switchgear and controls, demonstrating the proper use of meters, high voltage testers, meggers and similar testing equipment measuring the integrity of electrical components and detecting faults, hazards and the need for adjustments, relocation and or replacement.Implement lock-out and tag-out procedures demonstrating the safety requirements for operations and equipment and a commitment to personal safety.Perform operational duties to control, monitor and maintain the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system and the Remote Terminal Units throughout the power plant, grid system, substation and load center network. Responsible for ensuring reliable control and monitoring of electric power generation, transmission and distribution assets within power plant operating parameters analyzing trends and making adjustment for optimum facility performance.Perform tasks related to generator installation, commissioning and maintenance. Ensure that the generator installations/work meet the safety standards in accordance with international codes and regulations. Install, maintain and parallel large capacity generators to form complete electrical power generating plant using synchronizing switchgear.Responsible for generator routine service, providing list of maintenance and spare parts for diesel engines, alternators, and control panels as well as necessary tools and equipment. Maintain log books, maintenance records and spare parts consumption records.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education: High School education. Technical school, Military training.
Experience: Five years in the power generation, distribution, transmission, substation facilities or oil, chemical refining.
Specialized knowledge: The comprehensive knowledge and skills in the theory, principles, methods and techniques used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of high voltage electrical systems and rotating equipment. Experience with Caterpillar generator sets, 800KW to 1600KW range.
Skills:Ability to plan work from management assigments, determines nature of maintenance or repair needed, evaluate the effects on the total system and ensures power grid and electrical equipment integrity. Able to work from blueprints and schematics to determine materials, tools, equipment and procedures, and to layout work and setup equipment.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
a. Must be able to work in extreme climatic conditions where temperatures often exceed 140F. Must be able to lift 25lbs continuously and 50lbs intermittently. Must be able to work overhead with arms raised for extended periods.
b. Required to observe all safety and health requirements for office environment.
c. Must have professional appearance, consistent with local customs.
