McFarlane Toys is looking for a dynamic and experienced Package Design Department Director to create, develop and oversee the company’s package design department under the direction of the Marketing executive. This salaried full-time position is located at the company headquarters in Tempe, Arizona which enjoys an average of 350 days of sunshine each year, four professional sports franchises and a multitude of indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities around the state.

The Art Director would formulate concepts, manages the package design and production, and supervise a graphic design team engaged in executing artwork creation, layout design, and production of all packaging by performing the following duties:
Implement concepts and ideas as well as formulate new ones. Oversee the package design staff to ensure consistent company brand recognition, look and standards. Clearly and precisely communicate artistic concepts and criticisms to graphic designers. Review, approve, and present final layouts to the Marketing Director. Schedule work within tight production deadlines. Oversee traffic flow of creative projects through all stakeholders.Assign and direct staff members to develop layouts and prepare layouts for printing. Perform the duties of graphic designer as needed. Work with staff to correct performance problems. Provide creative direction for custom projects as needed.
The successful applicant must be:
An expert in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Quark. Creative. A Hard worker Able to communicate criticisms and ideas clearly to graphic design staff. Able to follow through on ideas. Able to work within tight deadlines. Have 5-7 years of Art Director and package design experience Have a Bachelors degree in appropriate graphic design field. Understand the differences in packaging styles (clamshells, shrink films, chipboard), and understand the advantages of each.Understand the application of visual communication fundamentals.Proficient in creating consumer retail packaging concepts that are sold through mass accounts (WalMart, Target, etc.)Proficient in signage and POP creation.
Although not required the following skills are considered a plus:
Personal knowledge and interest of sports, pop culture, fantasy genres, film, TV and music. Digital photography Adobe After Effects skills Print Production knowledgeOverseas manufacturing knowledgeUnderstanding of branding as it relates to consumer packaged goodsPackaging mockup comps
Salary commensurate and negotiable with experience.
