Transportation Systems Engineer
A Transportation Systems Engineer is an intermediate-level professional who applies a broad knowledge of engineering concepts, practices and procedures to successfully perform technical planning and systems integration tasks in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems design. A successful candidate will participate in the research, design, development, and testing of state of the art intelligent transportation systems. Engineering tasks will include integration of information processing hardware, electrical components, mechanisms, circuitry, and processes to meet overall system requirements. Additional engineering responsibilities will include comprehensive system design verification and validation along with the analysis of total system supportability and effectiveness. Applicants should have strong verbal and written communication skills with experience preparing technical reports. This employee may have development and implementation oversight, including hardware and software installation at system sites.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Ensure the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions and specifications that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
· Conduct engineering analyses of total system lifecycle to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal.
· Perform vendor evaluations and analyze test reports.
· Establish comprehensive system bill of materials to facilitate hardware and software procurement.
· Test and revise hardware and software enhancements and changes.
· Work with Site Technicians to install, maintain and repair (troubleshoot) project hardware and software systems at project sites.
· Participate in the development and preparation of system documentation including, but not limited to, construction drawings, implementation procedures, training manuals and user documentation.
· Position may require on-call duties, occasional after-hours activities, and physical exertion, including reaching, carrying and lifting heavy equipment
· Follow instructions with minimal supervision.
· Good time management skills to handle multiple projects. Ability to be flexible with time and work schedule, and provide consistent follow-through on projects.
· Work individually and as a member of a team. Occasionally, may provide guidance and assist in training of less experienced staff.
· Site support and project implementations may require 40-50% travel.
EDUCATION
Education: BA/BS or equivalent education in Industrial Engineering or related engineering discipline, 2-year technical degree in electrical engineering, or 5+ years of demonstrated, related transportation systems industry experience required.
Experience: Hands-on hardware systems engineering experience including design and integration of complex, real world data acquisition systems and information management systems is preferred. Specifically, experience integrating current data acquisition technology in the intelligent transportation systems industry (i.e., laser based separator and profiler, machine imaging subsystems, inductive vehicle detectors, etc.) is highly desired. Candidate should be a technical professional with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Working background with process control and system automation is beneficial. Experience with procurement processes and proficiency with Auto-CAD is a plus.
